The ingredients for a great concert revealed

By JACKSON SILVANIK
Staff Writer

Last Friday I was reminded exactly what a great rock show looks, sounds, and feels like. The band was Wilco, and though they have the benefit of being such a gifted group of musicians that just about any performance would have been worth watching, it was the combination of all the right elements that made the concert so memorable. Its not that I haven’t seen some great bands lately, but rather that so many artists don’t take the time to consider everything that makes a performance truly an experience.
There are several elements that, when combined, will indeed make a great concert. First, let us consider setting. Venue is a huge factor in establishing a connection between the audience and the artist, as well as forming a mental bond between the convergence of man and moment. The worth of a great, picturesque venue cannot be overstated. The great bands, of course, can make any venue memorable because of how they approach it. Seeing The Police in a starlit field with 80,000 fans becomes an experience of community. The ornate Palace Theater in Louisville lends a theatrical vibe to the performances taking place there (An already cinematic Sigur Ros performance was all the more beautiful because of the scenery). A legend like Springsteen can command a faceless arena with such authority that he makes you believe that the building exists solely for him to fill it with rock. It is the ability to make a venue work for your music that separates the pretenders from the contenders.

“Good Luck Chuck” delivers laughs, but falls short

26 09 2007

There is nothing better than a good old-fashioned romantic comedy. But throw in gross-out humor, excessive raunchiness and jokes that fall flat, and you have director Mark Helfrich’s  latest film “Good Luck Chuck.” I walked into the theatre expecting a sweet, heartfelt romance. Instead, I found an almost too sweet and too nasty movie. The film does deliver some good lines and does have some laugh-out-loud moments, but overall it tries too hard.
Charlie Logan (Dane Cook) is a successful, handsome dentist with a strange good luck charm: sleep with him once and the next person you date will be the love of your life. This makes Charlie very popular with the ladies, and the envy of his best friend, Stu, who is an unsuccessful “ladies man.” Charlie’s situation sounds like a dream for every guy, right? But Charlie’s charm backfires when he meets Cam.
Played by the gorgeous and charismatic Jessica Alba, Cam is a clumsy, accident-prone penguin expert. Charlie falls head over heels for her, but he has one problem. If he sleeps with her, she will fall in love with the next guy she dates. Charlie then devises some crazy schemes to make her not fall for anyone but him. Charlie’s plan goes wrong and what follows are some pretty hilarious stunts to win Cam’s love.
Cook has come a long way with his acting skills since “Employee of the Month.” He is charming, sweet and at times hilarious in the film, but I felt he was more funny when he was acting impromptu. The script at times delivered corny one-liners that left the audience silent, sometimes to the point of eye-rolling. Cook is a great stand-up comic, and I definitely feel he has a future with more major productions.
Alba had one of the funniest roles and her ditzy moments were hilarious. Overall, she was very engaging and a great romantic lead.

James Bush reflects on his experiences at Georgetown College

By HALEY HOWARD
Staff Writer

Ralph Waldo Emerson says that “life involves passions, faiths, doubts and courage.” Few Georgetown students understand this concept more than senior James Bush.
Through his involvement in Residence Life and the President’s Ambassador Program, Bush has learned a great deal about leadership and character. He’s most proud of his involvement in Common Ground, a weekly worship service in Hill Chapel. “This, along with my friendships developed at Georgetown,” Bush recalls, “has made my college experience.” Read the rest of this entry »

To find success after college, excel in these three areas

26 09 2007

By BOB ROTH
“College & Career Success” Coach

Success, during and after college, is the goal of nearly every student.  They understand that good college performance can open doors to jobs and further schooling.  However, few students are clear about what this actually means.
So let’s clear it up.  Every student can dramatically improve his chances for greater success when he excels in three areas:  academics, participation, and preparation for the job/graduate school search.
These things work together like the legs of a three-legged stool. When all three legs are strong and the same length, you have a suitable seat.  However, when one or more of the legs is weak or the legs are differing lengths, the effectiveness of that seat is greatly diminished.

A Movie, an Album and a Book

26 09 2007

Munich
Steven Spielberg’s Munich will likely remain one of the director’s most lasting films. Based upon real events, it details the aftermath of the murder of eleven Israeli athletes by Islamic terrorists at the 1972 Olympics. Five Israeli agents seek to avenge the deaths, but on their quest throughout Europe, they become internally conflicted after questioning their cause. Spielberg’s portrayal accurately portrays those called to extraordinary demands.
-Eric Blair

Neon Bible
This Arcade Fire album creates a sort of dark atmosphere with haunting sounds. Neon Bible features an array of instruments including the accordion, horns, hurdy gurdy, and various string instruments.  The album’s lyrics cover such subjects as corruption within religion and the dark side of war.  The sophomore album,  which lead singer Win Butler describes as similar to “standing by the ocean at night,” fulfilled my expectations and comes highly recommended.
-Jessica Sorrell

Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of those books you should read not just because you liked the movie, but because it is beautiful, haunting, and real in a way that you don’t see coming. The characters are jaded in a profoundly relatable way. It’s the kind of book that teaches you something while you weren’t even sure you were learning.
