Cate Gilgore and Michael Cannon star in “The Secret Marriage.”

If you come to what is rumored to be the college’s first opera, you’re going to see a professional show, complete with custom-made costumes, highly trained performers and super titles. In fact, it will resemble just what you’d see in an opera house. What you’re not going to see is a fat woman with horns and pigtails, Daniel Ng promises.

Monopoly and a moonbow

20 11 2008

By BETHANY BYRD, Contributing Writer

College was something I looked forward to from the time I was able to comprehend the notion of a collegiate experience. In my adolescent mind, it was going to be four fun-filled years of a glorified summer camp. Endless group activities, shared dorm rooms and communal showers sounded exhilarating to a young girl who spent three seasons waiting for summer to roll around simply for the opportunity to attend any summer camp possible.

Student looks forward to “Twilight-mania”

20 11 2008

By WHITLEY ARENS, Staff Writer

I swear my little sister must have been one of the first people to check out “Twilight” from the Scott County Public Library when it was published in 2005. Seriously, when she came home with a black book emblazoned with a pair of pale arms cradling a scarlet apple, “Twilight” meant nothing more to me (and the rest of the world for that matter) than simply a cool book cover. Now, a little over three years later, the series of four novels is complete, and the first movie is opening this Friday. A lot has changed, and a LOT of people now recognize the familiar apple cover. “Twilight” frenzy, “Twilight” fever, “Twilight”-omania or whatever you want to call it, it’s hard to escape.

Excerpts from a lyric essay

By ALLISON DAMRON, Contributing Writer

“The tectonic layers of our lives rest so tightly one on top of the other that we always come up against earlie
events in later ones, not as matter that has been fully formed and pushed aside, but absolutely present and alive.” —The Reader, 217

Technology offers opportunity and limitations to artists of all varieties

By JACKSON SILVANIK, A&E Editor

In a time of constant technological evolution, the medium in which the world consumes art and music is rapidly changing. Even the latest technologies can be rendered commercially obsolete within months of their release, prompting the average consumer to seriously consider the pros and cons before making the next purchase. Though this is true in all aspects of life, it is making an especially marked impact on the arts community.

Tigers wrap up football season with a win against WV Tech

20 11 2008

footballBy ANDY RUSSELL, Staff Writer

Although the calendar said Nov. 15, it felt more like Dec. 15. The temperature at kick-off this past Saturday at Toyota Stadium was 42 degrees and drizzling rain—not exactly the ideal conditions for a football game. With the field the way it was and the weather not giving any help, the players would have to earn this victory.

Lady Tigers off to a good start

20 11 2008

By CHRIS SIMPSON, Staff Writer

The Lady Tigers took to the hardwood Friday and Saturday against Daeman and Walsh Universities. The Tigers fell against Daeman on Friday, and Coach Johnson said, “We were surprised by a team that came out hot like a firecracker.” Although they played well, the Tigers fell short from the three-point range and had some trouble on defense, but Daeman was on fire with a shooting average of 60 percent. Coach Johnson stated, “As a whole we were disappointed.” Disappointment didn’t settle the Lady Tigers, because they rallied in Saturday’s game against Walsh, showing us why we love our Tigers. The Lady Tigers hit the boards, forced turnovers and drained some critical shots inside and outside the threepoint arc. Freshman Jessica Waddle racked up 13 points. Senior Makaine Huffer scored 13, as well, and Senior Katie Filiatreau led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 18 points.

Time Heals

20 11 2008

a zuihitsu by: DANIELLE RAY

[Hope is…]
Laughing again. Smiling for a picture. Shaving my legs. Singing “Better in Time” in my head…all day. Not calling, even though I want to. Showing up for all three classes. Being on time for work. Reading Greg Behrendt. An e-mail from Reba titled, “You are beautiful.”
[Thurs. 12:56 p.m. Day 3]
