Family Weekend features fun for all

The Cabrew Montage—Hanks, left, and Pennington, right—will be performing in the Grille this Saturday.

It’s that time of year again. The time of year when all of your professors get together and plot to make all your big assignments due on consecutive days (thanks, Songfest!) —the time of year where you realize how many more CEPs, excuse me, I mean Nexus credits, you still need to get—and, let’s not forget, the time of year where, on top of all the other things you have going on, you have to decide on your classes for next semester.

Is all the stress of the semester getting you down, making you miss your family? If so, then this weekend is for you! This Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 30-31, is Family Weekend and it’s the perfect opportunity for you to enjoy spending time with your family without having to suffer through the annoying drive home.

“Family Weekend is a great connection opportunity that gives GC families a chance to visit their students during a weekend designated just for them,” says Angela B. Taylor, Director of Greek Life and Judicial Affairs and the planner of all things Family Weekend.

You may be wondering what Taylor has up her sleeve for you and your family to do, and the answer is a lot!

Family Weekend kicks off with registration in the recently renamed “WOW Grille” between 10:30 a.m – 12:30 p.m. Take your family there to get tickets for brunch on Saturday and Sunday and for the football game, then go up to the Caf and enjoy a delicious meal.

If you want to kill some time before the game, you could go to the Mulberry Café (participants in Family Weekend get one free cup of coffee per family), The Store, the C-Store or visit one of our three free art galleries: the Dr. Donald L. and Dorothy Jacobs Gallery, the Cochenour Gallery or the Anne Wright Wilson Fine Arts Gallery.

A performance from Notes from the Underground, a band made up of GC faculty, will be one of the highlights of Family Weekend.

Then head over to Toyota Stadium to support the Tigers as they take on the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m.

Be sure to stop by the Spirit Shop, located conveniently inside Toyota Stadium to get some new Georgetown gear for the whole family. Don’t be surprised if the game is packed when you get there because not only is it Family Weekend, Saturday is also Greek Tailgate and a VIP Day for potential new Tigers.

After the game, show your family around Georgetown and come back to The WOW Grille for dinner.

At 8 p.m. you can enjoy some music by fellow Georgetonians in the Grille. The Cabrew Montage, made up of vocalist and guitarist Nick Pennington and drummer Hunter Hanks, will be opening for Notes from the Underground, a band made up of GC faculty Dr. Yoli Carter, Dr. Todd Coke, Dr. Todd Hamilton and Dr. William Stevens.

“Be prepared to watch our faculty take the stage and amaze you with their musical gifts,” says Taylor.

Sunday is a little more laid back. You and your family can be slugabeds and sleep in until the Caf opens at 11 a.m. or you can get up early and go to the church of your choice.

“We encourage you to attend church with your family in the community. If you are interested in learning about churches in the community, feel free to contact HK Kingkade, Director of Religious life at 502-863-8209 or email him at hk_kingkade@georgetowncollege.edu” says Taylor.

The Caf will be open from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, but make sure your family members know they have to pay in advance and have to have their ticket with them in order to eat. In case you didn’t get a chance to go on Saturday, the Cochenour Gallery will be open again on Sunday from 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

If your parents are not already a part of the Georgetown College Family Association, this is a great time for them to join, because not only will they get a discount to the football game during Family Weekend but you can get free stuff throughout the school year too!

Membership is only $30 for a year and includes a weekly subscription to The Georgetonian (only the best paper ever), ten drawings for reserved seats at events including Songfest, basketball games, plays etc., and a gift for you on your birthday. Just take them to the Grille on Saturday morning between 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. to fill out the registration form and sign up for Family Weekend.

Take the weekend off from studying and enjoy spending some time sharing what you love about Georgetown with your family at Family Weekend. If you have any questions, feel free to email Angela B. Taylor at angela_taylor@georgetowncollege.edu.
